The Mars Society UK is an independently-incorporated, autonomous organisation that forms a part of the international network of Mars Society organisations. As a non-profit company, Limited by Guarantee, the Mars Society UK Ltd is dedicated to achieving the goals set out by the Mars Society through a range of initiatives and activities, including:

  • Running conferences and symposia on the subject of Mars exploration
  • Actively attending space-related conferences and conventions across the UK
  • Attending and supporting UK space initiatives
  • Leading the Society's Euro-MARS project to establish an analogue research station in Iceland
  • Promoting the human and robotic exploration of Mars to schools, colleges, institutions, societies, etc., across the country

Although incorporated in 1999, the Mars Society UK is the longest-running entity within the structure of the Mars Society operating outside of the United States, having been formed in June 1998. The Mars Society UK also held the first major public event of the Mars Society when, on July 4th 1998, it hosted the first public presentation on the Beagle 2 project, with guest speaker Professor Colin Pillinger.

About the Mars Society

The Mars Society is a global network of organisations that share three common goals, namely:

  1. Broad public outreach to instill the vision of pioneering Mars.
  2. Support of ever more aggressive government funded Mars exploration programs around the world.
  3. Conducting Mars exploration on a private basis.

Most of the organisations within the Society function is independent legal entities within their own country of origin (as is the case with the Mars Society UK). Some, such as the Mars Society in the United States, operate state or city-based Chapters.

The Mars Society, as an international body, came into existence at a Founding Conference in Boulder, Colorado in 1998, which both established the Mars Society in the United States, and gave rise to the creation of a number of the global entities at that time. In recognition of this, the Society as a whole continues to hold its "international" conference annually within the United States, although conferences are also held each year in Europe and Australia.

What We Are Doing

Since its inception, the Society has:

  • Revolutionised planning for human missions to Mars through our Mars Direct mission profile, which has in turn influenced mission planning in NASA and elsewhere
  • Established an international group of analogue research stations in which crews can rehearse for operations on the surface of Mars
  • Initiated projects for both the robotic exploration of Mars and for investigating the effects of long-duration exposure to low gravity environments (such as would be experienced on the surface of Mars)
.
