Explore Mars Inc Launches

"Explore Mars is a project oriented group that was created to promote science and technology innovation and education with a use for Mars Exploration. Through a series of technology innovation awards, scientific symposiums and workshops, Mars analogue work, technology demonstrations, and other programs, we provide a platform for scientists and "citizen scientists" to engage in meaningful space exploration research and development in the private sector.

"In the first half of 2010, Explore Mars will launch a series of technology development challenges relating to Mars exploration, with prizes ranging from $10,000 - $100,000. There has been a common misconception that any sort of Mars prize would require billions of dollars to launch. In reality, there are an enormous number of technologies and processes that need to be developed before we send humans to Mars. Many of these technologies can be developed now and for less than $100,000."

Explore Mars Inc is a bold new venture in Mars exploration advocacy, and one which the Mars Society UK has been honoured to help in its formation. While predominantly a US focused organisation, Explore Mars has already engaged with international space advocacy organisations, the Mars Society UK (MSUK) looks forward to both working with Explore Mars Inc., and acting as their UK representatives.

Speaking following the launch, MSUK Managing Director Bo Maxwell said, "It has been my distinct pleasure to know Chris Carberry, Explore Mars' Executive Director, and many of the people who have been working hard to make this organisation a reality. The formation of this organisation opens an exciting new Chapter in our endeavours to further the robotic and human exploration of Mars, and we in the MSUK especially look forward to working closely with the Board and officers of Explore Mars in the coming years."

Already Explore Mars has announced the formation of the Mars Education Challenge in the United States - a programme the MSUK will be watching colosely with a view - pending negotiations with Explore Mars Inc - to adapting and introducing into the United Kingdom in the near future.
